Infectious diseases of a severe nature are often linked to the presence of Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL) and/or toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1), produced by some MRSA strains. While strains positive for either PVL or TSST-1 have been identified worldwide, the coexistence of PVL and TSST-1 genes in a single strain is a rare and sporadic phenomenon. In a study involving Japanese MRSA strains isolated between 2015 and 2021, a comprehensive analysis was conducted on 6433 strains. Molecular epidemiological and comparative genomic analyses were applied to a collection of MRSA strains characterized by the presence of PVL and TSST-1.
A total of 26 strains, displaying positivity for both PVL and TSST-1, were found within 12 healthcare facilities and were all part of clonal complex 22.
