We fill this gap by conducting a systematic literature review, which encompassed all empirical studies investigating DMHIs for depressive symptoms in adults within the timeframe of 2015 to September 2022. The search across Pubmed, SCOPUS, and Psycinfo databases uncovered 138 articles detailing 94 unique DMHIs provided to a total sample size of around 24,300 individuals.
The results of our investigation define personalization as a deliberate variation in therapeutic interventions' elements or structure, meant to address individual needs. This proposal outlines a more specific approach to personalization by categorizing what is personalized (intervention material type, order of content, assistance level, and interaction style) and the corresponding underlying methodology (user preference, provider input, predefined rules, and machine learning algorithms). Applying this principle, 66% of the interventions for depressive symptoms incorporated personalization, with individualized intervention content (32%) and direct communication with the user (30%) being especially favored strategies. Decision rule-based personalization (48%) and user choice personalization (36%) proved to be the dominant strategies, in stark contrast to the negligible use of machine learning (3%). A mere two-thirds of personalized interventions focused exclusively on a single aspect of the intervention's design.
Personalized experiences are expected to be further enhanced by future interventions, thereby capitalizing on the capabilities of machine learning models. Ultimately, concrete proof of personalized strategies was limited and unclear, thus necessitating a greater need for demonstrable advantages of individualized approaches.
