The bacterial strains and plasmids used in this study are described in Table 1. E. coli strains were maintained on LB-agar (10 g of tryptone per liter, 5 g of yeast extract per liter, 10 g of NaCl per liter and 15 g of agar per liter), Shigella strains were maintained on Trypticase Soy Agar plus 0.01% congo red. All strains were stored at −80°C in LB broth plus 20% glycerol. The bacteria were grown in LB broth adjusted to pH 7.4 with 40 mM MOPS (Merck) or M9 minimal media [24].
